Windows 10 Upgrade: Microsoft to Stop Supporting Windows 7

Security Updates Will No Longer Be Available

If you are using Windows 7 for business or personal use, now is the time to prepare for the Windows 10 upgrade. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide software and security updates, tech support, or protection from vulnerabilities for PCs running Windows 7.* Support for Internet Explorer on Windows 7 will also end the same day. Microsoft rolled out a patch in March of 2019 warning customers of the impending change in service and protection.

“After 10 years of servicing, January 14, 2020, is the last day Microsoft
will offer security updates for computers running Windows 7 SP1.”

This move is purposed to move users to the newest software, which does provide better security for users. And although it might be somewhat painful to make the change, it is an inevitable part of computer use in today’s business age.

*Note that Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise customers who have volume Windows 7 license agreements or are participating in the Software Assurance program have the option to pay for extended security updates until 2023. Also, Windows 8, will continue to receive updates until January 10, 2023.

What Does the End of Support Mean?

So, Windows 7 will be gone. What now? Do you need to buy new? Or just upgrade?

There’s no need to panic. Come January 14th, your computers and your operations will still work. But here’s what you need to worry about: when the next computer virus starts making its rounds, your computer and all of your data are not protected. You’re on your own. And if your server operates on Windows Server 2008, you need to pay attention to this too.

Some businesses may choose to get by for a while and risk not updating. That’s up to you, if you choose to take that risk. However, if your business is in the medical or financial fields, you don’t have that option. You will no longer be in compliance with HIPAA and other regulations, so the time to start planning and preparing is now.

Some Windows 7 / Server 2008 Upgrade Options

Upgrading to Windows 10 and ensuring that all of your other operating systems are compatible with the Windows 10 operating system can be a challenge. Factories and manufacturers may be among the most affected by this change. However, there may be some other options for businesses.

And if you are looking at replacing your Windows 2008 Server, rather than spending a possible $5,000 ̶ $7,000 for new equipment and Windows Server software and licenses, you may be able to purchase what’s called an NAS Box (Network Accessible Storage), which may only be about $2,000. An NAS Box provides file storage, backup, and security; however, it does not offer advanced features like Exchange Mail Services or Internet Information Services (IIS) that some companies require. But, if you just need file storage, it could be an affordable option for your business.

No matter your business, don’t get caught unprotected. Now is the time to start planning and preparing so that your business is not interrupted.
